Course Overview:

Modern musical theatre practitioners need to meet a broad and varied range of requirements, including the ability to adapt to styles, understanding the context of performance and performance space, and how to transform their theoretical knowledge into practice.

 

This course explores all elements of musical theatre, using a triple threat approach. Students will work on developing their acting, dance and vocal skills, explore a range of styles in Musical Theatre from different time periods, explore contextual factors of performance work, develop their professional skills and learn to critically reflect on process and performance.

 

The course is designed around three core modules, that stretch over a two-year period (360 guided learning hours), with a flexible, unit-based structure and knowledge applied in project-based assessments, as well as holistic learning, where skills will be combined. The core modules include:

– Musical Theatre Skill Development: Exploring performance styles (150 GLH)

– Musical Theatre Skill Development: Performing for an audience (150 GLH)

– The Global Performing Arts Industry: Planning a Career in the Industry (60 GLH)

 

Besides the technical knowledge and skills, this course helps students to develop intrapersonal skills, such as communication, working collaboratively, critical thinking and self-presentation, and interpersonal skills, such as self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development to become an all-round performer.

 

Goals:

Intensive training in vocal, dance and acting with a triple-threat approach

Broaden students’ understanding of a career in theatre and performance

Prepare students for higher education and/or a career in Musical Theatre through practical development and research

Stretch and challenge: maintaining high level skills and developing weaker areas

 

Requirements:

Students are able to commit for the full program (90 percent attendance is required)

Eligible for higher education (GCSE in Drama, Dance and/or Music OR equivalent experience and GCSE English and Maths at grade 9 – 4 or equivalent).

Students have an advanced level in all 3 disciplines and have the potential to audition for higher education in Performing Arts or a career in the industry

Students are highly motivated, not only in the classroom, but also outside in weekly homework assignments (suggested homework time is 4hrs/per week)

Students should have a very good understanding of English – reading, oral and written. The course is highly practical but it also demands thorough academic ability.
